Singular respectability is essential to society as the sort of society which is probably going to be progressively helpful for uprightness which is one which empowers individuals to create and utilize their ability for basic reflection, one which doesn't compel individuals to take up specific jobs due to their sex or race or some other explanation, and one which doesn't urge people to sell out one another either to get away from jail or to propel their vocation. Additionally, social orders can be positive for the advancement of individual uprightness. Society expects and requires trustworthiness of its pioneers. An individual of respectability demands making the wisest decision consistently, not just when he realizes that a prevalent or subordinate is watching him. It is the mental fortitude to finish a besieging run whenever one realizes without a doubt that the possibility for endurance is poor or non-existent or the boldness to concede disappointment instead of modify a report (Duggar nd.). Morals become possibly the most important factor when the interests of others are fused into the math ofâ personalâ and business dynamic as individuals we live inserted in a general public. The best people and organizations are those with notorieties of high individual honesty among everybody they manage. This degree of uprightness constructs the certainty and empowers them to accomplish more business than their rivals whose morals might be somewhat flimsy (Barry Stephens, 1998).â Respectability is finished genuineness in any circumstance (Flynn, 1978). We should figure out what is truly right and truly off-base. Right even rises above the infringement of guidelines. You should restrict what's going on and bolster what is correct regardless of whether it costs you your life or your profession. At the end of the day, respectability implies more to the expert official than the word reference definition. It implies genuineness, honesty, unwavering quality, unprejudiced nature, truthfulness, receptiveness, dependability, and fortitude. It implies absolutely moral conduct consistently and in all circumstances, paying little heed to the outcomes. It can't be turned here and there as wanted; it is the focal point of the experts life (Flynn, 1978). Babbitt (1997) expressly connects singular trustworthiness to social structures in a manner that expands the idea of honesty. In the event that social instructive structures neglect to encourage the life of uprightness, different structures might be emphatically antagonistic to it. As Babbitt (1997) notes, one should have the option to settle on decisions so as to build up the sorts of interests and concerns which are critical to driving an existence of uprightness. Then again, persecuted individuals are frequently ready to consider social real factors with the more noteworthy knowledge since they don't profit by them. They have no motivation to acknowledge self-tricky perspectives about conditions of persecution or to see past them with advantageous visual impairment. Mistreated gatherings in this manner have even more degree to consider social reality with uprightness, and to carry on of this comprehension with honesty. A limit with respect to reflection and comprehension empowers one to progress in the direction of trustworthiness regardless of whether it doesn't guarantee that one accomplishes a perfect of uprightness. A sufficient record of individual honesty must perceive that some social structures are of an inappropriate sort out and out for certain people to have the option to seek after close to home respectability, and that inquiries concerning the ethical idea of society frequently should be posed first before inquiries about close to home trustworthiness can appropriately be raised (Babbitt, 1997). Inquiries regarding respectability may end up being, not about the connection between singular attributes, interests, decisions, etc, and a general public, yet rather about what sort of society it is as far as which an individual comes to have certain interests, qualities, etc. This doesn't infer that inquiries regarding individual respectability are totally good, not having to do with eccentric attributes of people; rather, it proposes that the extremely significance of individual uprightness specifically cases here and there relies on progressively broad contemplations about the idea of the ge neral public that makes some peculiar properties recognizing and others not. The quest for satisfactory individual respectability regularly depends, less on understanding what one's identity is and what one accepts and is focused on, yet rather understanding what ones society is and envisioning what it could be (Babbitt, 1997). 3.1 The Importance of Integrity in Organization Honesty alludes to the way of life, arrangements, and administration theory at the corporate level. A culture of honesty needs to begin at the top and be found in the exercises of the officials. The administration of the organization must build up an agreement around the mutual qualities (Warren, 2009). Setting hierarchical andâ personal trustworthiness in the ethical setting could give association a structure for articulating unpretentious parts of the companys authoritative life, for example, culture, schedules, etc. These have direct effect on gainfulness and on the companys maintainability. The explanation is that similarly as people have a personality or character, the organization does as well. The hierarchical culture of a firm is the character, personality or character of the organization. It is involved the suppositions, qualities, standards and moral direction of association individuals, just as of their practices (Nelly, 2007). Uprightness is important to compelling pioneers in the working environment. It might perhaps put at the top among the trademark that a pioneer needs to have. In this manner, when looked among good and bad, uprightness implies settling on the right decision for pioneer. Plus, pioneers in associations and organizations exhibit capacity to oversee and propel laborers while promoting the points and objectives of the business. A pioneer who reliably shows uprightness and the readiness to settle on the correct choices to benefit the association supports devotion and responsibility from laborers. It is a significant factor in moving the organization for those laborers react emphatically to a pioneer or administrator with trustworthiness (Kelchner nd.). Laborers will get on and take action accordingly if businesses will exhibit trustworthiness and honesty in all circumstances. As indicated by Bruyn power for the pioneer doesn't spill out of the association however from the impact that pioneer needs to persuade individuals to perceive and acknowledge that power. Basically, a pioneer must form and keep up believability with his supporters. Those pioneers who depend upon the association to give them the power they need will never have adequate position to do their undertakings since what they need isn't authority from an outside source yet to construct impact through honesty with the goal that they can impact individuals themselves. It isn't the plate on the entryway that gives a pioneer the power to lead yet the trust of the individuals being driven (Maxwell, John, 1993). It is significant for a person to decide for a business with comparable qualities. This match will be a key factor in ones capacity to develop expertly and gain understanding. As Quigley (2007) has brought up, the way of life of honesty might be unquestionably more significant than the beginning compensation in ones mission for individual and expert satisfaction. He takes note of that partnerships with a culture of respectability will offer help to workers through associates and procedures set up. Conference with other is viewed as quality as opposed to a shortcoming and supports a work-life balance. This is on the grounds that it decreases work pressure, balances ones point of view, and adds to work fulfillment (Quigley, 2007). 3.2 The Importance of Integrity in Individuals Trustworthiness is credited to different parts or parts of a people life. There are those properties, for example, expert, scholarly and aesthetic respectability. Honesty is more than morals at the individual level. It is about the character of the person. It is those attributes of a person that are reliably chivalrous, merciful, straightforward, genuine, and moral. Be that as it may, the most insightfully significant feeling of the term uprightness identifies with general character (Cox, La Caze, Levine, 2001). Respectability imparts to self as well as other people such that clairvoyant completeness or individuation doesn't. It is this nature of coherence that lessens trustworthiness such a fundamental factor in psychotherapeutic practice. It decides the manner by which the individual identifies with the world and to others on the planet just as to their own self. It tends to be comprehended as a specific good, rather than mental characteristic which has an immediate relationship with the remainder of the subjects moral being while at the same time being autonomous of it simultaneously. It is a given of character and can't be accomplished (Gross, 2001). As indicated by Quigley (2007), he underscores the basic job of trust in the expert accomplishment of a person. He states: Simply put, the individuals who curve rules are not viewed as dependable, and without trust a people esteem is seriously decreased. Markets don't capacity and worth is demolished without trust and certainty. (Quigley, 2007, p.9). Quigley proceeds to take note of the basic significance of trustworthiness and character in the work environment. Capabilities are negligible if lacking trust. People who are not dependable won't be given chances or obligations, and they won't be needed as colleagues by customers or different workers. People are conniving without uprightness. People who own honesty will focus on picking directly before they end up in a circumstance (Quigley, 2007). Respectability is a nature of soul that lives in each one of us (Sherman, 2003). Proficient trustworthiness and moral conduct is urgent for personalâ credibilityâ and proficient accomplishment inside the business world.â irispearson1974http://www.blogger.com/profile/04261908323010184148noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1093246237595265887.post-67994190530980477162020-08-22T16:42:00.001-07:002020-08-22T16:42:29.456-07:00Chinese Wedding DressesChinese Wedding Dresses At most Chinese weddings, the lady of the hour wears a qipao. Bradley arguably does the most through job as seen in Lecture VII and VIII of his work Shakespearean Tragedy. In Lecture VII, Bradley begins by discussing the similarities King Lear has to Shakespeareââ¬â¢s other works including Othello and Timon of Athens (245-246). For instance, in Othello, Iago reminds of Edmund and Othelloââ¬â¢s trickery reminds us of the deceitfulness of Gloucester. Additionally, the scene where Othello watched Iago and Cassio talk about Bianca bares a similar resemblance to Edmundââ¬â¢s attempt to make Gloucester see his conversation with Edgar (Bradley 245). Bradley then goes on to discuss the lack of clarity in many of the important scenes such as why King Lear would divide the kingdom among his daughters and make them tell him how much they love him (250). Furthermore, although the final battle was of the most importance, it became largely insignificant because of the numerous prior battle sc enes and characters involved (Bradley 255). Bradley also raises some very interesting questions in regards to the number of inconsistencies throughout the play such as why Gloucester traveled to Dover to attempt suicide, why Kent stays in disguise during the final scene, and why Shakespeare does not provide us the locations of the scenes like in his other works (257-259). As the lecture progresses, Bradley delves deeper into analyzing King Lear. Bradley starts by pointing out the use of double action, which heShow MoreRelatedWilliam Shakespeare s Influence On The Course Of World History1440 Words à |à 6 PagesWaldo Emerson, a famous essayist inspired by Shakespeareââ¬â¢s works. Answer: Introduction In an academic institute, the most significant role is played b yh the educators who are the main driving force to the students academic excellence. Apart from academics, a students moral characteristics are developed by the senior facilitators who are supposed to shoulder the responsibilities of the foundation of a nations future strength. Educational leaders are the no one but the educators who undertake different roles in edifying them with various teaching and non-teaching guidelines. The scholars have raised questions whether the teachers can be considered as educational leaders. However, most of the academicians who contribute greatly to the overall development of their pupils are considered as leaders. It is said the students imitate and emulate those teachers who are close bto them and create a significant world of their own, where the students could expect greatness and creativity. Educational leaders are not different from the political leaders or the business leaders since they adhere to the basic trait of leadership- creation, innovation and path- foundation. The following paper demonstrates different leadership qualities and characteristics that are accepted to be ideal in an educational sector. Through profound understanding of the leadership qualities and theories, I would like to present my own reflection as a leader. As an educator in an academic institute, I would like to establish myself a democratic leader- one who provides liberty and rationality of free thought within the students. The following reflective paper is going to validate my aspiration as a democratic leader through the analysis and integration of distributive leadership model. There is occurring constant evolution of the demand associated with the educational leaders. For preparing myself for facing these challenging aspects as well as creating transformative change regarding education, I have the requirement for understanding the educational leadership function, the responsibilities associated with it as well as my viewpoints to further my education for moving ahead in my in my career in this field. There is the involvement of working with teachers as well as other educational professionals regarding educational leadership relating to methodical plans for improving educational programming as well as results. The function of educational leaders are accountable for facilitating development as well as positive change that is required, analyzing the data of the student as well as observing classes for pinpointing potential challenges as well as development areas building efficient teams as well as committees changing the structure of the organization creating as well as updating budgets designing, implementing as well as assessing school policies as well as procedures hiring, evaluating as well as managing teachers setting the standards for curriculum working towards reforming education on the local, state or national level (Guskey, 2014) For accomplishing these tasks, it is essential to work as well as interact with others that include teachers, staff as well as students and their families. The building of relationship is necessary for efficient educational leadership, and it is necessary for acknowledging as well as supporting the roles and every contribution of the stakeholders. A true leader will be creating an environment for education where there is the presence of the scope as well as support relating to positive change all through the organization (Guskey, 2014). I am aspiring to imbibe the democratic leadership model in education. This model will be securing the full participation of the staff members in the schools decision-making processes that will be promoting meaningful association as well as harmonious work associations, generating passion to accomplish objectives as well as boosting student and teacher effectiveness (Parkay, 2014). The democratic leadership model is following the distributed leadership theory that is having the involvement of distributing responsibility based on every administrative levels, functioning through teams as well as engendering collective responsibility. Distributed leadership approach will be addressing leadership in accord with teams, groups as well as organizational traits (Hallinger, 2014). Distributed leadership is presenting descriptive perspectives regarding schools that will be leading them. In fact, distributed leadership activities are directed towards provision as well as continuing the positive learning environment where teaching as well as evaluation activities are being considered. Moreover, distributed leadership theory is depending on proficiencies, information as well as contributions formed due to the relationships network between individuals that are directing, guiding as well as working with teachers in the method to improve education (Talbot, 2016). The two educational leaders who are inspiring me are Rafranz Davis and Vicki Davis. Both of them are possessing the democratic leadership traits. Rafranz Davis is the Instructional technology specialist for Arlington, Texas school district. She is presently working to support the implementation of technology as well as professional development in respect of the teachers. She is a writer, speaker as well as advocate regarding passion-based learning and takes into consideration varied perspectives in developing as well as implementing technology for education (Diamond, 2016). Another personality is Vicki Davis who is the Creator of Cool Cat Teacher Blog, IT administrator and teacher at Westwood Schools. She is presently teaching business and computer skills at Westwood Schools in Camilla, Georgia where she is the IT administrator as well. She is mainly known for her Cool Cat Teacher Blog, in which she is sharing advices regarding teaching as well as social media. In addition, she is pr oviding professional development as well as workshops for schools as well as institutions (Gunter, 2013). Distributed leadership is having significant influence on the conditions for learning at a school. In this context, it can be stated that distributed leadership approach is a complex process that is having the involvement of balancing technical as well as symbolic demand and takes into consideration various components. As a result, it can be stated that distributed leadership is not just the sharing of tasks or the assignment of individuals towards particular tasks(Harris, 2013). In this kind of leadership, to work in respect of similar objectives with constant communication as well as interaction is highlighted in comparison to personal effort and there is a possibility for the staffs to function in a collective manner as well as learn together, like the development of capacity of a teacher with the support of another teacher (Sewerin, 2017). As an academic instructor, I am expected to abide by certain teaching ethics. These ethics are highly motivating and challenge breaking. As a democratic leader, I aspire to possess some certain qualities of the previously mentioned personalities who are known to be some of the most influential academic leaders in modern time. My entity as a leader shall have to be innovative. The basic leadership quality of a person encompasses creativity and improvisation of the thought process. While comprehending deep about my contribution to the grater student mass, I have realised that my basic intention was to make them understand the goal of their life. However, there are different ways of to edify and educate the students. I would often ask myself, Should I teach them or should they learn from me? Should they be students of mine or should they follow the path I recreate? These questions were to be answered on a proper note. Thus, my realisation was begotten by my rational mind that my traits can never be imposed upon the students as long as they do not want to imbibe those spontaneously. This was the first step to my democratic leadership quality as I learnt to put my decisions into rationality. My transitional approach towards democratic trait of leadership was highly motivated by one of the most influential leaders in world business, Steve Jobs. The transitional history of Steve Jobs from an autocratic leader to a democratic one fostered the idea of adaptation of participating or democratic leadership quality within me so that I can prioritise my students viewpoint while making a decision. However, participative leadership does not mean that every opinion is to be embraced. The process of filtering according to the best decision making factors is the true sign of potential leadership quality. Different activities are to performed in an institutiona l level while educating a greater number of masses. According to Edwin Locke, a participating leader always shares obligations and power of decision making in a workplace. My leadership quality in an institution will remain participative since I believe to share the power of decision making with the students so as to build the same quality within them. A brief anecdote of decision- making process can be exhibited in the paper that validates the trait of my leadership. Most of the educational frameworks are decided in an autocratic way. Student participation in academic layout is not bothered by the authority of an institution. Hence, most of the time the students do not seem to be happy with the academic structure designed by an institutional authority. for the first time I designed a lay out for the institutional academic framework and also provided blank sheets to the students so that they could come up with their thoughts. At the end of the term the students representative sat together with me and the institutional head and proposed their designed. With rational discussion, we ended up in the fact that we had to assemble the entire program so as to keep a balance between both the proposal. In the end of the academic year, we established a new program. For the first time, the students contributed. This was a team-work and I was q uite contented as I was able to form a team and carried out the concept of togetherness. Thus I went along with the distributive leadership model. Te old smoothbore muskets had very limited range and were not very accurate. In places where soldiers on firing lines were more than a hundred yards apart a smoothbore musket wouldnt do much damage. Mass numbers of soldiers would often charge next to each other towards the defensive line and use bayonets and their superior numbers to wipe out the enemy. However rifled muskets changed the way that soldiers fought. It was a muzzleloader and had grooves inside the barrel that guided the bullet much more accurately. A charging mass of soldiers would be caught in enemy fire half a mile away and so it was impossible for them to get to the defending enemy and kill them. But these new rifles could not be fired very fast. Before a soldier could fire his musket, he had to bite open a paper cartridge, pour powder down the musket barrel, push the bullet in with a ramrod, cock the hammer, and set th e percussion cap. New soldiers spent weeks trying to learn how to do t his quickly, but even the rifle fire from experienced soldiers was slow Heavy guns were also loaded by pouring in the powder and then the charge. Between shots the barrel was swabbed out. If a spark remained from the previous shot, the new powder being poured in would explode. This makes the guns very dangerous. Most heavy guns had smooth bores and were not very accurate, but when fired against a mass of advancing infantry they were deadly. The official uniform for the Union soldiers was blue but many regiments chose their own uniforms. The Blue and Gray has become the name for the soldiers of the civil war probably because many people thought that all Northern troops wore blue uniforms and all Southern troops wore grey. However this was not always true. A famous New York group of volunteers wore baggy red pants and short red jackets. The Iron Brigade of Michigan wore wide-brimmed black hats, with a feather curled up at the side. The United States Sharpshooters wore dark green uniforms, leather leggings, and feathers in their hats.Uniform was scarce for Southern soldiers. Before the war, the South sent almost all its cotton to Europe or the Northern states to be made into cloth. There were no factories in the south to make uniforms. Women in the south learned from their grandmothers or from their poorer neighbours how to weave homespun cloth. They made dye for the cloth from butternuts. Soon the most common colour worn by Confederate soldiers was not grey but the warm brown of butternuts.Union Tactics at the Battle of GettysburgOn June 24, 1863, General Robert E. Lee led his Confederate Army across the Potomac River and headed towards Pennsylvania. In response to this threat President Lincoln replaced his army commander, General Joseph Hooker, with General George Mead. As Lees troops poured into Pennsylvania, Mead led the Union Army north from Washington. Meades effort was inadvertently help ed by Lees cavalry commander, Jeb Stuart, who, instead of reporting Union movements to Lee, had gone off on a raid deep in the Union rear. This action left Lee blind to the Unions position. When a scout reported the Union approach, Lee ordered his scattered troops to converge west of the small village of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. On July 1, some Confederate infantry headed to Gettysburg to seize much-needed shoes and clashed west of town with Union cavalry. The Union commander, recognizing the importance of holding Gettysburg because a dozen roads converged there, fought desperately to hold off the Rebel advance. Other Union troops briefly stopped some Rebels north of town. During heavy fighting, the Confederates drove the Union troops through the streets of Gettysburg to Cemetery Hill south of the town. Lee ordered General Richard Ewell, now commander of the late Stonewall Jacksons old units, to attack this position if practicable, a vague order that Jackson normally took to mean la unch an all-out attack. Ewell was not Jackson. He decided not to attack once he saw the Union artillery atop the hill. Had he attacked and succeeded, it might have changed the course of the war.The rest of the armies arrived that first night. The Union army established a defensive position resembling a fish hook, with Culps Hill and the two Round Tops anchoring each end. Lee decided to attack both flanks the next day. On his right flank, Union troops mistakenly shifted out of position, leaving Little Round Top undefended. At the last moment, a Union general rushed troops in just ahead of the charging Confederates. After a long day of fighting, they barely held the position. The misplaced bluecoats were pushed back through The Peach Orchard, The Wheat Field, and Devils Den. On the left, Ewells assault failed due mainly to his poor leadership.Thinking the Union centre had weakened from these attacks; Lee decided the next day to hit it first with artillery, and then an infantry charge led by George Picketts division. Stuarts late-arriving cavalry was to come in behind the Union centre at the same time, but they were held off by Union cavalry led by a young General George Custer. After an hours duel, Union artillery deceived the Confederates into thinking their guns were knocked out. Then 13,000 Rebels marched across the field in front of Cemetery Hill, only to have the Union artillery open up on them, followed by deadly Federal infantry firepower. Scarcely half made it back to their own lines. In all, Lee lost more than a third of his men before retreating to Virginia. Meade, a naturally cautious man, decided the loss of one-quarter of his men had been enough, and only feebly tried to pursue Lee, missing an opportunity to crush him.Brief BiographiesAbraham Lincoln: The 16th president of the United States was a self-taught man of humble origin. Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809 in a cabin near Hodgenville, Kentucky. His parents, Nancy Hanks and Thomas Lincoln, were pioneers, and the family moved several times during Lincolns boyhood. When Lincoln was eight years old, the family moved to Spencer County, Indiana. His mother died shortly thereafter, and the next year proved to be very difficult for Lincoln.Fortunately, Lincolns father married Sarah Bush Johnston the following year. She was an affectionate, energetic woman, who grew quite fond of Lincoln. She encouraged his desire to read, although she was virtually illiterate. Lincoln received very little formal education. His total schooling amounted to about one year.In 1830, the Lincoln family moved again and settled in Illinois. Since Lincoln was 21 years old and had no desire to become a farmer, he set out on his own. After working for a time as a flatboat man, shipping cargo to New Orleans, Lincoln settled in New Salem, Illinois. He worked various jobs as a rail splitter, postmaster, surveyor, and storekeeper. In 1832, Lincoln enlisted as a volunteer in the Black Hawk War and was elected captain of his company.Lincoln considered pursuing several professions, including shopkeeping and blacksmithing, but finally decided to study law and pursue political office. Lincoln educated himself in the law, as he had done previously with mathematics and grammar, and in 1836 he passed the bar examination. Two years earlier, Lincoln had been elected on the Whig ticket to serve a total of 4 terms in the Illinois State Legislature, from 1834 to 1841. In 1836, Lincoln entered into a law partnership with John T. Stuart and settled in Springfield, Illinois. He later practiced with Stephen T. Logan, then William Herndon. Lincolns practice was quite successful, and he was considered one of the most distinguished lawyers in the state. He was described as fair and completely honest. While living in Springfield, Lincoln became acquainted with Mary Todd. Her family was considered part of the social aristocracy, and her father was a prominent banker. Although Lincoln broke off the engagement once, the two were finally married on November 4, 1842. Todd had a difficult disposition; nevertheless the couple had a fairly successful marriage and enjoyed each others company. They had four children, but their son, Robert Todd, was the only child to reach adulthood.Lincoln served one term in Congress from 1847 to 1849, but his criticism of the Mexican War proved unpopular with his districts voters. He was not re-elected and was further disappointed when he was not named commissioner of the general land office by Zachary Taylor, as expected. Lincoln withdrew from politics for approximately five years and returned to his legal profession in Springfield. However, in 1854, Lincoln became alarmed when Stephen A. Douglas, a former political rival, introduced a bill to reopen the entire Louisiana Purchase to slavery. Lincoln was vehemently opposed to this bill. Although Lincoln was neither an abolitionist, or in favour of slavery, he did not believe slavery should be permitt ed in the new territories. In 1858, Lincoln became a senatorial candidate for the newly founded Republican party. Although he was defeated, the public debates between Lincoln and Douglas increased his public recognition. During one of these debates, Lincoln declared the famous words, A house divided against itself cannot stand. I believe the government cannot endure permanently half slave and half free.In 1860, Lincoln was nominated by the Republican Party for the presidency. He was elected on November 6 and took the oath of office on March 4, 1861. The country faced many problems before Lincoln took office. South Carolina had withdrawn from the Union and other states soon followed. The majority of Lincolns presidency focused on the war of secession, and throughout it all, Lincoln vowed to preserve the Union. One of Lincolns greatest difficulties was finding capable generals. He experimented with various personnel, including George B. McClellan, John Pope, Ambrose E. Burnside, Joseph Hooker, and George Gordon Meade. In 1864, Lincoln found him in Ulysses S. Grant and entrusted command of all the Federal armies to him.On January 1, 1863, Lincoln delivered the final version of the famous Emancipation Proclamation, and with it, added the idea of freedom for all men to the battle cry of the war. The proclamation ultimately led to the adoption of the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution.Lincoln was re-elected in 1864 over the Democratic opponent, General McClellan, and by the spring of 1865, the Union had won the war. Several days after the Union victory, Lincoln attended a play at Fords Theatre in Washington DC. As he sat in the theatre, Lincoln was shot by assassin John Wilkes Booth. Abraham Lincoln died in the early morning hours of April 15, 1865.Robert E Lee: (1807-1870), brilliant Confederate general, whose military genius was probably the greatest single factor in keeping the Confederacy alive through the four years of the American Civil War.Lee was born o n January 19, 1807, in Stratford, Virginia, the son of Henry Lee, and was educated at the United States Military Academy. He graduated second in his class in 1829, receiving a commission as second lieutenant in the engineers. He became first lieutenant in 1836, and captain in 1838. He distinguished himself in the battles of the Mexican-American War and was wounded in the storming of Chapultepec in 1847; for his meritorious service he received his third brevet promotion in rank. He became superintendent of the US Military Academy and was later appointed colonel of cavalry. He was in command of the Department of Texas in 1860, and, early the following year was summoned to Washington, D.C., when war between the states seemed imminent. President Abraham Lincoln offered him the field command of the Union forces, but Lee declined. On April 20, three days after Virginia seceded from the Union, he submitted his resignation from the US Army. On April 23 he became commander in chief of the mil itary and naval forces of Virginia. For a year he was military adviser to Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederate States of America, and was then placed in command of the army in northern Virginia. In 1864 his pre-war home, Arlington House, had been confiscated by the Union army and, in a symbolic reproach to Lee, its grounds had been made into a cemetery for the Union dead (now the Arlington National Cemetery). In February 1865 Lee was made commander in chief of all Confederate armies; two months later the war was effectively ended by his surrender to General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House. His great battles included those of Antietam, Chancellorsville, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg. The masterly strategy of Lee was overcome by the superior resources and troop strength of the Union. His campaigns are almost universally studied in military schools as models of strategy and tactics. He had a capacity for anticipating the actions of his opponents and for comprehendin g their weaknesses. He made skilful use of interior lines of communication and kept a convex front towards the enemy, so that his reinforcements, transfers, and supplies could reach their destination over short, direct routes. His greatest contribution to military practice, however, was his use of field fortifications as aids to manoeuvring. He recognized that a small body of soldiers, protected by entrenchments, can hold an enemy force of many times their number, while the main body outflanks the enemy or attacks a smaller force elsewhere. In his application of this principle Lee was years ahead of his time; the tactic was not fully understood or generally adopted until the 20th century.Lee applied for but was never granted the official post-war amnesty. He accepted the presidency of Washington College, now Washington and Lee University, in the autumn of 1865; within a few years it had become an outstanding institution. He died there on October 12, 1870. In 1975 Lees citizenship wa s restored posthumously by an act of the US Congress. The Life of a HistorianMathew Brady arrived in New York City at the age of sixteen. Soon after taking a job as a department store clerk, he started his own small business manufacturing jewellery cases. In his spare time, Brady studied photography under a number of teachers, including Samuel F. B. Morse, the man who had recently introduced photography to America. Brady quickly discovered a natural gift. By 1844, he had his own photography studio in New York.Brady soon acquired a reputation as one of Americas greatest photographers producer of portraits of the famous. In 1856, he opened a studio in Washington, D.C., the better to photograph the nations leaders and foreign dignitaries. As he himself said, From the first, I regarded myself as under obligation to my country to preserve the faces of its historic men and mothers. He became one of the first photographers to use photography to chronicle national history. At the peak of his success as a portrait photographer, Brady turned his attention to the Civil War. Planning to document the war on a grand scale, he organized a corps of photographers to follow the troops in the field. Friends tried to discourage him, citing battlefield dangers and financial risks, but Brady persisted. He later said, I had to go. A spirit in my feet said Go, and I went.Mathew Brady did not actually shoot many of the Civil War photographs attributed to him. More of a project manager, he spent most of his time supervising his corps of traveling photographers, preserving their negatives and buying others from private photographers freshly returned from the battlefield, so that his collection would be as comprehensive as possible. When photographs from his collection were published, whether printed by Brady or adapted as engravings in publications, they were credited Photograph by Brady, although they were actually the work of many people. In 1862, Brady shocked America by displaying his photographs of battlefield corpses from Antietam, posting a sign on the door of his New York gallery that read, The Dead of Antietam. This exhibition marked the first time most people witnessed the carnage of war. The New York Times said that Brady had brought home to us the terrible reality and earnestness of war. After the Civil War, Brady found that war-weary Americans were no longer interested in purchasing photographs of the recent bloody conflict. Having risked his fortune on his Civil War enterprise, Brady lost the gamble and fell into bankruptcy. His negatives were neglected until 1875, when Congress purchased the entire archive for $25,000. Bradys debts swallowed the entire sum. He died in 1896, penniless and unappreciated. In his final years, Brady said, No one will ever know what I went through to secure those negatives. The world can never appreciate it. It changed the whole course of my life.Despite his financial failure, Mathew Brady had a great and lasting effect on t he art of photography. His war scenes demonstrated that photographs could be more than posed portraits, and his efforts represent the first instance of the comprehensive photo-documentation of a war.Why was the Union Army victorious over the Confederates? It was foreseeable that the union would be triumphant over the confederates. In 1850 there were 22 states that made up the union, which had a joint population of 22 million. The 11 states that made up the Southern states had only a combined population of 9 million including 4 million black slaves. Most of the factories that were capable of producing war materials and weapons were located in the North. The south only had one mill for making gunpowder. The North had vast numbers of railroads and a merchant marine. They could maintain worldwide commerce. The South had many farms but they could not export their products because they had few ships and their main ports were usually closed during the war.During the war the South had mostly the superior field commanders. Although Robert E Lee was superior to every Northern general except Grant, he was defeated when Grant used overwhelming numbers and determination to crush his forces. In the west, no general in the South was a much for the generals of the North, who were Grant, Sherman, and Thomas. In the naval part of the civil war the Union navy was unmatched. In the long term, the superior numbers and equipment of the North ultimately determined the outcome of the American Civil War. The Southern armies kept the Northern armies at bay until the Battle of Gettysburg in 1865, which was the turning point of the war. Lincolns support of democracy also had an affect on the outcome on the war. The emancipation Proclamation had prevented any foreign country to help the South. In the North the majority of the people wanted the restoration of the American Union. irispearson1974http://www.blogger.com/profile/04261908323010184148noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1093246237595265887.post-6043259644852435332020-03-14T10:50:00.001-07:002020-03-14T10:50:02.446-07:00Free Essays on Night And Catcher In The Ryeââ¬Å"A great book should leave you with many experiences and slightly exhausted at the end.â⬠A well-written book should provide the reader with numerous occurrences and events throughout the literature. Companies spend a lot of time, money and energy into selecting and hiring the best recruits and can only hope that they will stay through the orientation programs and beyond and be a good fit with the organizational culture so that they can be contributing to its goals in the shortest time possible. In some ways, the success of the hiring program also depends to a great extent on the investment of time and energy in planning these aspects. As much as candidates try to show organizations that they are the best talent available, the organization also should try to show potential employees that they are the best employers. Coca Cola should know, it has over 100 years of experience and is a global enterprise having the worldââ¬â¢s most recognized brand. As explained, I interviewed Miss Ceree Eberly, Human Resources Director for Coca Cola, USA. It was a short telephonic interview, but I think I got what I was looking for. She put me in touch with another HR representative who answered most of my questions on the companyââ¬â¢s recruiting, selection and onboarding processes. One of the problems that HR is facing regards the verification of details on the forms and resumes of potential candidates. Like their Face book and Twitter profiles, resumes of candidates may be highly embellished or inflated with experiences and skills that they never had or used and roles they never played. The second difficulty is that candidates give up too easily during the hiring process and are frustrated because of current economic conditions in the USA. The company understands that this is partly because of post-recessionary trends seen in the economy, but society will have to adapt. They want candidates that are skilled and confident and see the job as a career, not just a stepping stone to another organization (SIOP, 2002). Each movement was much longer than the Vivaldi. It was strange the comparison. I thought the Concerto form had 4 movements. Allegro Adante Allegretto. It sounded as though Mozart was making fun of us at several momemts. Vivaldi is known as the red priest because of his flaming red hair. In paintings he was shown wearing a wig. His Four Seasons is a perfect example of programmed music. It was unheard of at the time. Beethoven would be the next person to use it in his Pastoral symphony. Vivaldi received his first music al training from his father but was initially ordained as a priest. He was dismissed from the priesthood after a year and was able to devote his life to music. In the 17th century it was part of any religious training to have complete musical training. The girls orphanage had over a thousand girls who were trained to become nuns. This provided Vivaldi with an abundance of talented girls to with whom he had access to a constant orchestra and girls who could play a multitude of instruments. Perhaps this is why he was such a prolific composer. He set the precedent of baroque concerto of three movements ABA or allegro andante allegro leading to the longer classical concerto. Bach admired his work but it was only in the 20th century that many scores were found hidden in Turin, Italy. http://www.classicalnotes.net/classics/vivaldi.html The Four Seasons were published in 1725 but Vivaldi alluded that they had been written well before. They were four concerto out of 12 to be published for t his patron. He actually wrote over 500 concerti in all. The theory that Vivaldi wrote the sonnets which correspond to the concertos is only confirmed on the basis that each sonnet is divided into three parts explaining to the player how the music is to be interpreted. There are some who say they were written afterwards http://www.sanbernardinosymphony.org/PDF's/ProgramNotesJan11.pdf Mozart's Piano Concerto Nà ° 12 K414 represents one of his first compositions after he moved to Vienna. Mozart's father was his most avid fan, his teacher and his friend. He was opposed to his moving from his secure post in Salzburg to Vienna and basically become a freelance musician. It was common for musicians and composers to travel from London, Paris and Vienna in the 18th century. This is why so many different styles and influences of difference composers were part of the classical scene. http//www.questia.com/History Of Western Music Groves. 2001 New York Norton. Discuss. Humans appear to have both a body and a mind, the body which is related to physical movements and appearances. And the mind which relates to feelings and emotions, qualia. Many philosophers therefore make a distinction between the mind and body, the dualist view that a person is made of two separate substances. On the other hand, some philosophers take a monist/ materialist view that the mind and the body are the same substance. This is a contentious area of philosophy, and has created a debate known as the mind, body problem. Such philosophers as Plato take a dualist view and try to offer evidence to suggest a distinction between the body and soul. Plato saw the body and soul as two separate entities. The soul that most closely resembles the divine and immortal. While the body resembles the human and mortal, which is endlessly changing and can be broken down. Plato was not trying to suggest the soul was perfect as it joined the body which it is inhibited by, however, he explains that by taking care of the soul the person can develop knowledge. Plato used evidence such as the world of the forms. He suggested that by taking care of the soul and ignoring physical pleasures the soul can return to the word of the forms when the body dies. The evidence of Platos theory can be seen everyday. For the body to survive it must meet its basic needs such as food, reproduction and physical pleasure. On the other hand for the mind to be stimulated it has other needs that are met through deep thought and learning. However, there is a flaw to Platos theory, how can you have two completely different substances that are the same thing? Platos theory suggests the body and soul can work together to achieve a higher level of existence, but if the body and soul are completely different there is no evidence to suggest they would be compatible. Another dualist, Aquinas took a more religious view of dualism. He believed that the body and soul were separate and described the soul as that which animates the body or anima. According to Aquinas, the soul operates independently of the body. Aquinas believed the only things that are divisible into parts decay. The soul is not divisible and therefore on this basis of Aquinas argument it is able to survive death. However, through the link with a particular human body the soul becomes an individual so even when the body dies the soul that departs has an immortal existence. Evidence for religious views on the soul come from the bible. Within the new testament, there are stories of Jesus resurrection that suggest dualism. Within one particular story Jesus disciples are walking to Emaus. Along the way they are joined by a man, it is only when they arrive at Emaus and offer the man a place to eat and stay that he reveals himself as Jesus. This supports the dualist view as firstly, it proves that the soul is immortal and lives on after death, and secondly that the soul is separate from the body as the man who claims to be Jesus appears to be unrecognisable implying he has a different physical appearance. For Christians this will act as firm evidence that there is a body soul distinction, however for those who are not Christian the evidence may not be so reliable. Cartesian duality formed by Rene Descartes, describes the mind and body as being separates and is based on the phrase I think therefore I am. Descartes explained that feelings and sensations cannot be located physically. He accepted that everything non physical is in the mind and therefore must be distinct from the body. The mind according to Descartes is non spatial and is distinct from material and bodily substances. He suggested that everything has characteristics and that the mind and bodys characteristics are different therefore hey must be separate. For example a property of the mind may be consciousness, whereas the body has more aesthetic qualities such as height breadth etc. Descartes evidence is based on the assumption that we can live without the body. He concluded that the body has the job of performing physical activities however, it is the mind that contains our identity. For Descartes the mind is I, that we can live without the body as the mind makes us who we are. Descartes took the religious view that after our death the soul is able to continue and be with God. A mans soul is that to which the pure mental properties of a man belong. Richard Swinburne developed a dualist view based on the soul being indestructible and indivisible. Swinburne suggested that is a logical possibility for a person to exist after the body dies, as the soul lives on. The soul according to Swinburne is linked with mental processes and activity and its independent from the body. Evidence for Swinburnes theory comes from near death experiences. In many instances people have claimed to have had near death experiences whereby their hearts have stopped during surgery and yet they have reported detailed accounts of what happened during the time they were clinically dead. For some this is evidence for consciousness, however if the body and soul is one entity this would be impossible. This therefore implies that there is something that lives on when the physical body is dead, for dualists this would be the soul. On the other hand although the details of the experiences seem to be accurate there is no proof that the experiences may not be caused by another physical phenomena. On the other hand Dawkins, a biological materialist would disagree with the opinion that the soul and the body are separate substances. Dawkins bases his theory on evolution and genetics. He would reject any concept of an eternal soul and therefore rejects dualism. Some of Dawkins work includes the selfish gene and the blind watchmaker Within these he rejects any idea of the religious view of dualism and within the selfish gene he explains that humans are a lucky accident and that all life is opportunistic and humans are merely genetic mutations with the need to mindlessly replicate. Dawkins does not deny human dignity and accepts the complexity of human life to be able to contemplate the origins of human life. The evidence for Dawkins theory of biological materialism is based on DNA. Dawkins explains DNA as a code of instructions that is made up of millions of strands of genetic information. Genes according to Dawkins program who a person is, and it is DNA that singly creates what a person looks like as well as their personality. For Dawkins both the mind and body are controlled by the DNA and therefore he suggests that there is no need for a soul. Although Dawkins theory is based on empirical evidence and it has been proved that certain genes decide certain parts of a persons characteristics there is yet no proof to suggest that genes make up the whole of a someones personality and therefore it could be seen that there may be something else, this may be the soul. John Hick has formed a view of religious materialism. He stated that humans are one composite being, one substance. His theory the replica theory he realised from a religious point of view the problem was continuity. In life after death how can someone be the same person without their body. Therefore Hick suggests that there must be some kind of replica. This replica is the same person however, whilst they cannot exist at the same time. According to Hick at the same time that when a person dies a replica of them is created by God. This is a way of preserving personal identity after death. The evidence for religious materialism is based on the resurrection of Jesus. Some accounts during the new testament describe Jesus after the resurrection and was recognised by followers before ascension. From a religious view this is evidence for the replica theory as it appears that Jesus died and when he came back had the same physical appearance as well as the same personality. Identity theory puts forward a materialist view of the soul. Identity theory is against behaviourism and suggests that the mind and the brain are in the same place. In the brain, consciousness is generated as well as the other physical processes we link with the brain such as movement. Evidence for this is put foreward in the philosophy files. Within the book and analogy explains how if you were to look in the brain you would be able to locate an area that is stimulated and that thoughts must be generated in this area. We already know only 10% of the brains capacity is used consciously and therefore it is a logical assumption that our mind is located within the brain. An analogy for this is that a woman can be a mother, a daughter and a sister etc. The same person can have many functions, it is therefore the same for the brain which as well as having the functions we already recognise such as controlling physical activity, speaking and controlling bodily functions it can also control the mind. Overall, although religious philosophy offers an explanation for the body soul distinction it is based on little empirical evidence. For those who already follow the religion it may fit in with their beliefs however, for those who are atheist of follow another religion the evidence that it uses makes little logical sense. Such dualists views as Plato where the assumptions are based on everyday life may be more appropriate, however there is still little empirical evidence to prove the theory. On the other hand materialists put fore ward convincing arguments based on scientifically testable theories i.e. Dawkins. But neither arguments yet put enough evidence fore ward to either prove their views or disprove that of others. Therefore the statement Religious philosophy can offer no firm evidence for a distinction between body and soul may be considered as correct, however there is not yet enough evidence to suggest that religious views of dualism cannot be true. irispearson1974http://www.blogger.com/profile/04261908323010184148noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1093246237595265887.post-88942979049745359162020-01-22T19:44:00.001-08:002020-01-22T19:44:02.621-08:00Differences Between Bureaucrats And Aristocrats In Government :: essays research papers Bureaucrats and aristocrats, the former evident in the government in the Tang dynasty (617-907) and the ladder pronoun in the government of Heian Japan. Both are different in many different aspects, such as within government, government structure, law, economy, and society.A bureaucrat can be defined by the following: an appointed government official with certain duties and responsibilities defined by disposition in the bureaucracy. A bureaucrat is more dependent on the government than an aristocrat because official power comes from official appointment through the bureaucracy (Class Lecture, Oct. 16, 97). Bureaucracy first replaced aristocracy in the Tang dynasty, under the rule of Empress Wu (625?-706?, r.690-706) bureaucracy was expanded by furthering expansion policies and supporting the examination system. Positions in government were filled through the examination system, and people who passed were called the literati. When one held this title of literati, you were considered intelligent and were considered to have high status (TA session, Oct. 28, 97). "They were a group of smart guys with a good education." (Steve, TA session, Oct. 28, 97). This of course deprived the hereditary aristocracy of power 'they had enjoyed during the period of division, when appointments had been made by recommendation, and opened government service to a somewhat wider class of people...' (Schirokauer, p.103). For the first time, men who entered office through examination could attain the highest office, even that of Chief Minister. Examination graduates earned (earn being the operative word) prestige, and even though officials still entered government by other means such as family connections, at the same time the literati and thus the bureaucrats were gaining authority, jurisdiction, and power. And thus, one could see this shifting of supremacy from the aristocracy to the bureaucracy.Government in the Tang dynasty was regulated by the Tang legal codes, a system of laws written by legalists which consisted of a system of rewards and severe punishments (TA session, Oct. 28, 97). These legal codes were administrative: reporting what the state could do and what the subjects could not do. This is an important point in that, this showed the subjects possessed little power, the Tang legal codes are the opposite of any laws of present day, these legal codes protected the government and not the people. Government needed the subjects only to provide for taxes (revenue), labour (grain) and military (soldiers) reasons. 'A dead subject was not as useful as a living subject. irispearson1974http://www.blogger.com/profile/04261908323010184148noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1093246237595265887.post-46284078283038480822020-01-14T16:08:00.001-08:002020-01-14T16:08:04.509-08:00ICT Meeting Special Needs EssayIntroduction In this report I will describe a wide range of technologies which Tony Mcnulty, who is disabled, with an evaluation of the extent to which these meet their needs. Tony is paralyzed so he can no longer use his hands and legs properly. Sometimes Tony cannot hear very well sometimes and has to have sentences repeated to him several times. Tony was formally an architect but he fell off a building site whilst on a job. He now gets his staff to go on sites and he draws the designs at home. Tony is cared for by his brother but is married with three children. Tony normally goes out with his friends to pubs and clubs with people with similar disabilities. Technology 1 Electronic Wheelchair An electronic wheelchair is a wheelchair which uses a battery (usually a gel cell or wet cell) that must be re-charged on a regular basis. These types of wheelchairs are significantly heavier than most manual wheelchairs because they must house both the battery weight and the weight of any additional adaptive equipment. Advantages The advantages of electronic wheelchairs are that they are powered by a battery which means less physical use of the body for those who find it hard to use their hands properly. Another advantage of electronic wheelchairs is that there is no need for someone to assist you can go by yourself. Another advantage is that it easier going uphill because you are not using up any of your energy. Disadvantages The disadvantages of electronic wheelchairs are that they cannot be folded like manual wheelchairs so this may be a problem in small houses. Another disadvantage is that the battery runs out and needs to be charged so you can not travel far without it needing a recharge. Personal Needs An electronic wheelchair meets Tonyââ¬â¢s personal needs because he can go out anywhere he wants to go without the need of assistance from anyone. He also goes out and does shopping if his carers are not at home. An electronic wheelchair meets Tonyââ¬â¢s personal needs because Tony has the chance to go out for fresh air for longer and more often because if Tony used a manual wheelchair he gets tired of moving it with his hands so would then have to go back home. Another personal use that Tony uses the wheelchair for is to go shopping, the wheelchair allows him to do this on his own, as it can lift to reach products on high shelves and it can also climb stairs, meaning that he can go shopping almost anywhere without being assisted by a family member or a friend to help him. But with his power wheelchair he goes out for a lot longer but he has to be back home before the battery runs out. Evaluation of how it meets his personal needs It can be found from the personal needs above that the Electronic wheelchair fairly effective at meeting Tonyââ¬â¢s needs. This is because Tony needs the wheelchair to be able to run for at least 6 or 7 hours at the time, and it can do this very easily, this is as the battery life of the electric wheelchair is reasonably long and it can allow Tony to stay on the move for long periods of time. Also because the frame of the Wheelchair is so strong, it allows him to do a lot of things. For example the wheelchair has the ability to climb stairs, and without the strong frame it would simply break apart under Tonyââ¬â¢s weight, so therefore the strong frame allows the technology to meet his needs even more effectively as it proves that it is dependable and will not crack under pressure. Electric wheelchair is mainly positive, however it has some problems, one being that because it is so heavy due to its metal frame, Tony finds it hard to travel with it meaning that he cant really go on holiday on his own or even fold it away when he is at home, although he never really does as he cant walk. This means that the electric wheelchair is not completely successful at meeting Tonyââ¬â¢s needs, but it is the best thing for it as other forms of wheelchair simply do not have enough functions to help Tony. Social Needs An electronic wheelchair meets Tonyââ¬â¢s social needs because he can take it to go out with his friends and family on outings. He also doesnââ¬â¢t have to worry about the battery running out because his friends or family members push him home whenever this does happen. Electronic wheelchairs allow Tony to more free time because he is going out with his friends so he can get to the destination faster rather than pushing a manual wheelchair around and having to stop for quick breaks when he gets tired. He can also set other dates to go out on his days off. The electric wheelchair has quickly become an integral part of his social life as it simply has allowed him to do things he was not able to do before, such as going out for a drink or even going to go and watch a football match with his mates. As the Technology meets this need, it gives him the opportunity to go out with friends to bars and restaurants, which is his main social need. Evaluation of how it meets his Social needs The Electric wheelchair is almost perfect at meeting Tonyââ¬â¢s social needs as it has almost all the properties needed to meet his social needs. Due to its reasonably long battery life it allows him to successfully meet his social needs, such as going out for lengthy periods of time, giving him more time to enjoy himself. The electric wheelchair is one of his most helpful tools that help him conquer his disability, but even this technology has some problems. For example due to it being quite dangerous because it is vulnerable to faults, such as the brakes not working. Professional Needs Tony uses his electronic wheelchair in his professional life because he canââ¬â¢t walk properly very much without falling so he takes his electronic wheelchair to work so he can look around the building site properly An electronic wheelchair meets Tonyââ¬â¢s professional needs because he can look around the building site properly without having to tell his staff to look around all of the time and make suggestions. The electric wheelchair is a vital part of Tonyââ¬â¢s workplace, in terms of mobility. As I have said earlier, Tony is an architect, and this involves a large number of tasks that are almost impossible for him. Especially the electric wheelchair, it allows him to perform the most crucial part of being an architect. It lets him get to sites on time and then move around the site so that he can keep on top of all his jobs and do it on his own, as the wheelchair allows him to move freely in and around his workplace. Another important need of Tony that he has at work is that he needs to be able to go up stairs to view sites which require climbing stairs so his wheelchair allows him to climb stairs as it has this function, meaning that he can get around work without having to get people to carry him up stairs. Evaluation of how it meets his professional needs Overall the technology is very effective at meeting Tonyââ¬â¢s professional needs. It gives him the opportunity to move around building sites freely as the wheelchair can get through the tightest spaces, meaning that is effective at meeting his need off moving around building sites effectively. Also because the battery life of the wheelchair is quite long it can get him through the average 9 to 5 day and even more as it is possible for the day to be delayed. Therefore the electric wheelchair helps Tony get through any un-suspected surprises that might come up at work. This makes the wheelchair very reliable as it is not only mobile but very reliable and Tony can almost always depend on it. Although the wheelchair is very good at meeting Tonyââ¬â¢s work needs, it lacks a few things, for example, if Tony had a worst job he would not be able to afford the wheelchair that he has and he might not be able to keep his job without it. Also because the wheelchair can be dangerous someti mes, he often needs the help of colleagues to help him out in certain situations, such as opening doors or getting down stairs. Technology 2 Braille Keyboard The Braille keyboard was designed to stop the development of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Cumulative Trauma Disorders, Repetitive Motion Syndrome, Repetitive Strain Disorders and Repetitive Stress Injuries, and other injuries. Your entire upper body and arms are relaxed as your wrists remain straight while you type. Advantages The advantages of a Braille keyboard are that it helps stop the development of many diseases which may save you lots of pain in the future. Disadvantages The main disadvantage of a Braille keyboard is that it costs more than a standard keyboard so this may be a problem for people that canââ¬â¢t work. Personal Needs Tony uses his Braille keyboard in his free time when he is using his computer at home he mainly uses it to browse the internet. He also uses it to type letters to companies and spreadsheets for tax purposes. A Braille keyboard meets Tonyââ¬â¢s personal needs because he uses the internet on a daily basis. Although he can use a standard keyboard it puts lots of strain in his hands so he then has to stop. Another need it meets is that it allows him to use a computer that he can surf the internet and do any other things he may want to do. Also a Braille keyboard allows him to make notes and type letters to people through meaning that he no longer has to rely on a notepad and pen. Evaluation of how it meets his personal needs The Braille keyboard is very successful at meeting Tonyââ¬â¢s personal needs. This is because it allows him to do a lot of things he was unable to do before on his own, primarily communicating with people in spare time which he was unable to do before due to his disability. Also the fact that he no longer has to rely on people to help him around the house means that the Braille Keyboard does its job really well when he is actually spending time on the computer. The Braille keyboard is also very successful at meeting Tonyââ¬â¢s personal needs as he can connect it to his wheelchair and have it with him almost everywhere, meaning that not only can he be independent at home but also outside the home. Therefore he can use it like a laptop. Although the Braille keyboard seems to be great it has some setbacks. For example it is very expensive and Tony had to save every penny to get it, meaning that there was a chance he could not get the keyboard. This is because he has already had to invest in other expensive technologies to meet his needs such as the Electronic wheelchair. Professional Needs The Braille keyboard has eventually become the heart of Tonyââ¬â¢s workplace as it allows him to do his job in almost the same way as he used to do before he sustained his disability. The keyboard gives him the opportunity to go to building sites again and to continue his job as he used to, maybe not as fast as before and with a few mistakes but there is no doubt that slowly it allows him to get back to a normal architects organization. Being a architect also involves a lot of computer input and the Braille keyboard allows him to do it very easily so he can input as much information as he wants into any kinds of types of programs, such as typing letters in Microsoft Word or creating spreadsheets in Microsoft Excel. Evaluation of how it meets his professional needs The Braille keyboard is efficient at meeting Tonyââ¬â¢s work needs. It gives him the chance to once again have the same work life as he had before his accident by allowing him to do things that are important to his job that he could not do without it. For example with the keyboard he can still create designs which are required of him as an architect. Therefore this allows him to do his job even though he has a disability. Also because it can be connected to a computer it allows him to complete any computer input he may have at his office without the use of extra technologies such as a tracker ball mouse or a single fingered keyboard, meaning that it is very effective as it incorporates a few technologies in one. However the Braille keyboard sometimes has problems inputting information into a computer as he sometimes finds it hard to fully control his hands meaning that the Braille keyboard is not always fully successful at meeting Tonyââ¬â¢s work needs. Technology 3 Stair lift A stair lift is for people who cannot use their own feet to climb the stairs or for people who sometimes get dizzy whilst climbing the stairs. Advantages The advantages of stair lifts are that you can climb the stairs without being afraid that you will fall and you can climb the stairs any time of the day without the worry of possibly having to climb the stairs. Disadvantages The disadvantages of stair lifts are that most stair lifts are very expensive to buy and maintain. Another disadvantage is that if the lift stops working the person may not be able to climb the stairs until the lift is back working. Personal Needs Tony uses a stair lift personally as he has to climb the stairs to go to any of the rooms. He also has to have a shower upstairs so he uses the lift many times a day. Tony also has to use the lift to get to his bedroom when he is going to sleep. A stair lift meets Tonyââ¬â¢s personal needs because he uses the lift many times a day and cannot live in his own house without it. Tony has to use the lift every day and several times a day. Also the stair lift has allowed him to and from his own room as he can now use the stair lift without the fear of falling down the stairs. The stair lift can also be used by him to communicate with friends through email, as he has to climb the stairs to get to his computer. Evaluation of how it meets his personal needs The single finger keyboard is good at meeting at Tonyââ¬â¢s needs, this is as the stair lift is very easy to use and it takes little time to get used to operating it. This means that Tony learns how to use more and more technologies so if he bought another similar technology it would not be very hard for him to use as he can quickly learn the ins and outs of this easy to device. The stair lift is also very good at meeting Tonyââ¬â¢s personal needs as it is reasonably cheap and he doesnââ¬â¢t have to spend large amounts of cash in order to be able to climb stairs, this allows him to save money for more essential things. Professional Needs Tony uses the stair lift for a number of important work needs. One of the most important was that the stair lift allowed him to get to his office on the second floor of his home, meaning that he could do his job again even though at a slower pace. Another need that it met was that he could transport documents whilst on the stair lift without needing someone to help him. Also with the help of the stair lift he can gain access to his computer which is also in his office so he can once again type letters to clients and business partners without having someone to do it for him, meaning that he can do most of the real important things that an architect has to do. Evaluation of how it meets his professional needs The stair lift is good at meeting his work needs as it allows him to do one of the most important architect tasks, which are computer designs. This means that his work life can go back to an almost normal state, as the stair lift is very good at helping him work through the disability and resuming a almost normal working life. Without the stair lift he would have had to move his office downstairs then he would have had to sacrifice one of the rooms downstairs to make way for his office. Due to the large amounts of work that have to be done in a architects office, the keyboard frequently has to be maintained as it is cheap parts and it can easily break, meaning that it could break at any moment, not letting Tony work until he gets a replacement or he has to wait for an engineer to fix it for him. Therefore the stair lift doesnââ¬â¢t completely meet Tonyââ¬â¢s work needs. irispearson1974http://www.blogger.com/profile/04261908323010184148noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1093246237595265887.post-77992335995715412372020-01-06T12:32:00.001-08:002020-01-06T12:32:05.073-08:00Animal Testing A Necessary Evil - 1486 Words A Necessary Evil, ââ¬Å"Animal Testingâ⬠The word ââ¬Å"animal testingâ⬠refers to any experiments or actions performed on living animals for purposes of investigation into basic biology and diseases, assessing the effectiveness of new medicinal products, and testing the human health and environmental safety of consumer and any pharmaceuticals. It is true that animal test tends to be essential to most of the fields related to human body. Since the procedures of the test have a high potential to cause physical and as well as psychological harm to the subject animals, animal test has been a controversial issue for a long time. As the industry grew more and more throughout the nineteenth century, the number of animals used in tests increased along with the number of tests themselves. This fast increase in animal testing resulted in the development of numerous agencies aimed at stopping animal testing while also sharing their sentiment with the greater public [1]. As time went by, the rift between the supportive side of a nimal test and the opposing side continually deepened and even now still thereââ¬â¢s no such a distinctive common ground have found. Not just because I am pursuing biomedical engineering study, such experiment on animals for ensuring humanââ¬â¢s good seem to be a necessary evil for me. In his book Human Natures: Genes, Culture and the Human Prospect , Paul Ehrlich argues that the cultural practices of a given society develop largely as a result of the large-scale environmental factors of the area in which the society lives. He gives the striking example that all religions that developed in deserts are monotheistic, whereas those that began in rainforests are polytheistic (Ehrlich, pp 9 of handout, 2000). Ehrlich argues that the size and geography of a region, its climate, the availability of resources - the macroevolutionary forces - will have an enormous effects on the cultures that develop there. The population slowly grew as agriculture developed on the island. Many native Polynesian food sources could not be propagated on the island, but sweet potatoes and chickens were successfully imported. The islanders were also heavily dependent on fishing, which they did in wooden canoes. By the sixteenth century, the population peaked at around 7,000 people. Initially, the agriculture was successful enough so as to only require a relatively small amount of labor, leaving the inhabitants with large amounts of free time that enabled them to develop complex religious ceremonies and rituals. The most striking aspect of the religion on Easter Island was the carving of up to a thousand massive stone busts located throughout the island, some weighing nearly eighty tons. Although their function is not completely understood, these statues are generally believed to have been used in religious ceremonies and also as signs of prestige among the different clans on the island. These statues were transported over the island on enormous systems of wooden tracks.
